38th Annual Art and Design Competitive Exhibition

Selected Student Artworks on Display. The Mississippi State University Department of Art will host its 38th Annual Art and Design competition and exhibit from March 8 through March 26, 2010. The opening reception and awards ceremony will be held this Thursday, March 11 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the McComas Hall Art Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public. The gallery is filled with over 120 works of art in photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and graphic design. Over 15 awards with a combined value of over $2,000.00 will be given in Fine Art and Graphic Design categories. This year’s jurors are Wendy Deschene, who has exhibited in Canada, Europe, Japan and the US is Associate Professor of Painting at Auburn University and Derick Holt who is a five time winner of the Print Magazine Award of Excellence, a New York graphic artist, illustrator and Art Director for Diner Journal.

Major support for the 37th Mississippi State University Art & Design Competitive Exhibition comes from the Chalet, which sponsors the Faculty Merit Awards in Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior categories, The Chalet Graphic Design Award, and The Chalet Acquisition Award. Other award sponsors include the Blufish Design Purchase Award, the Starkville Area Arts Council Award, the Donovan Dodd Memorial Fund Award, and the Dylan Karges Studio Achievement Award, Dr. Nancy McCarley and Charlie Spirrison Purchase Prize, Dr. Angi Bourgeois and Dean Thomas Bourgeois Purchase Prize, and the Shackouls Honors College and University Honors Council Purchase Award are all awards that make this competitive exhibition an eagerly anticipated event. Other important sponsored awards come from Williamsburg and RGH Paints in New York, Mount Vision Pastels.
Mississippi State University fills the final award slate with the Division of Student Affairs Purchase Award, the College of Architecture, Art + Design Dean’s Award. The Department of Art sponsors the Fine Art Merit Awards, the Graphic Design Merit Awards, the Creative Achievement Award in Fine Art, the Creative Achievement Award in Graphic Design, and the Best of Show Fine Art and Best of Show Graphic Design awards.
The exhibit and opening reception is sponsored by the College of Architecture, Art + Design, the Department of Art, and the Department of Art Gallery. The next exhibition, "Naked Sponges: BFA Thesis Exhibition of graduating Seniors will run April 5 -23, 2010 with an opening reception April 8, 5:30 – 7:30pm. The Mississippi State University Department of Art McComas Gallery hours of operation are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. except during university holidays.
